Truewan Wireless Internet
FAQ - General
What is Wireless Internet?
Fixed Wireless Internet uses wireless technology to transmit broadband internet to customers. Each customer has a CPE (Customer Premises Unit) on its roof which receives the internet transmission from the TrueWAN Wireless Internet high sites.
The CPE needs to have clear line of sight to one of the high sites to ensure good signal strength.
What is the speed of the Wireless Internet?
We offer the same speed to all our clients running at a maximum of 15Mbps (15360kbps). Since the speed of internet is determined by the type of website, congestion on the internet, international vs local website etc, we cannot guarantee the speed.
Most ADSL packages only give you a speed of 384kbps. Higher ADSL speed is available, but then the line rental increases to as much as R500 per month.
Is Wireless better than ADSL?
There are many advantages to Wireless Internet over ADSL, but one cannot say the one is better than the other. It is the best to weigh up the pro's and con's, and decide for yourself.
Advantages to TrueWAN Wireless:
-
TrueWAN provides up to 15Mbps* Internet at a cheaper price than equivalent ADSL. (* using a download manager & dependant on site)
-
TrueWAN is more than just internet, it's a Wide Area Network enabling users to link more than one premise, share the CAP, securely copy data or work on an off-site PC or server etc.
-
No need for a phoneline, no copper cables to be stolen & replaced.
-
TrueWAN has full control over equipment on the network and can quickly assess problems on the network and at each customer's CPE.
-
True Technologies can also provide faster onsite support than with ADSL. Support local!
-
What is included in the installation fee?
The installation fee of R1450 (incl VAT) includes the following:
- CPE (customer premises equipment) - The device that receives the internet signals. This is mounted on the roof of your building. This equipment remains the property of True Technologies and is repaired, maintained and upgraded on our account. No need for the client to purchase expensive wireless equipment, thereby lowering the installation cost.
- The necessary cable & connectors from the CPE to the closest computer.
- Labour - the installation usually takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the location of the computers and the CPE.
All extra requirements and equipment, such as wireless routers, switches etc. cost extra.
Do you offer capped or uncapped internet?
TrueWAN offers best of both worlds: superfast unshaped internet with a CAP as well as affordable uncapped wireless option at only R400 per month. The uncapped TrueWAN account is limited to a maximum of 4Mbps, with a fair usage policy of 5Gb per 7 day roll-over period. Should a client use more than 5Gb in a 7 day period, your speed will decrease exponentially. This will ensure that uncapped users will have a pleasant experience and the network will not be bogged down due to one or two clients hogging the bandwidth. What happens when I reach my cap?
With TrueWAN, you will have no down-time or suspension when you reach your cap/limit. We have an automated CAP report system that can notify you via e-mail either daily after you've reached 80% of your cap or every day and to multiple or single e-mail addresses. You can also send an e-mail to us to request a detailed cap report, with graphs and report options such as daily, hourly, monthly, per IP address etc.
Once you've reached your cap, there's no interruption to your internet or speed, but all data used after your cap has been reached, will be charged at R50.00 per 512Mb at the end of the month.Should you wish to temporarily suspend your internet account once you've reached your cap, you can arrange it by contacting the True Technologies office. The only way to block your account is if you request that we do so. Note that we do not constantly monitor all users cap status as it's an automated system logging the traffic.
What is a POE?
POE is short for Power Over Ethernet. It is a small device that powers the Wireless CPE (Customer Premises Unit) on your roof. A power supply connects on the one side and 2 network cables on the other side, one to the CPE (marked POE or DATA OUT) and the other via a network cable to your PC/switch/AP router (marked LAN or DATA IN).
We mainly use one of these three POE units:
Used in older installations Used for current installations Used for Nano Station installations

If your internet does not work, it is advisable to unplug the POE from the wall socket; then wait a minute before connecting the power again. In 90% of the cases, that restores the Internet connection.
Can I roam or travel with my Wireless Internet?
We only do fixed wireless internet which does not allow you to travel with it.
However, your username and password can be used to access your TrueWAN mail anywhere in the world via web mail.
When I get Truewan Wireless, is my whole house/business wireless?
The answer is no. True Technologies offers fixed wireless internet, which relays internet to a fixed point at your premises.
However, if your premises need to be completely wireless, there will be several options. These will be charged extra for, and is not included in the initial installation fee. For a customized quote please contact our office.
Can I connect more than one computer to internet?
Yes you can, however you would need extra equipment such as a network switch or wireless router. Contact our office for pricing.
FAQ - Account Enquiries
How & when do I pay?
The once-off installation fee is due in advance, upon submitting of your application.
For the monthly subscriptions, we prefer payment via debit order. EFT, cash or bank guaranteed payments are also accepted.
All payments are due on/before the 7th of each month, otherwise your account will be suspended until payment is received. A reconnection fee of R50 will apply.
Can I up/downgrade my package?
Yes you can. All we need is a written request to change your TrueWAN CAP via e-mail or letter. The change will take effect from the next calender month.
Please note that you cannot downgrade your package if a 24-month contract has been signed.
What is the billing period?
Your usage is calculated from 00:00 on the 1st to the 1st of each month. Billing takes place on the 1st of the month. Monthly subscription fees are in advance for each month and the calculation of Over Cap usage is at the end of each month (added to the next month's bill). Debit orders are deducted on the 7th. This may vary slightly, depending on whether these days are over a weekend or on a public holiday. All fees are due on or before the 7th of each month.
How can I pay my TrueWAN account?
We prefer payment by debit order, as this minimises administration. EFT, cash or cheque payments are accepted as well.
If payments are made by EFT/Cash/Cheque, it has to be received by the 7th of each month, otherwise your account will be suspended until payment is received and a R50 reconnection fee charged. Should your debit order fail for some reason, a R50 fee will be levied and the account blocked until payment is received.
Can I up/downgrade my package?
Yes you can, changes will take effect from the next month. Please send written confirmation of such changes to our office.
Please note that you cannot downgrade your package if a 24-month contract has been signed. Why is my usage too high?
Each user is responsible to monitor their usage. True Technologies do not have records of what users do online and which websites they visit.
The common reason for high usage is:
- Virus (usually indicated with high uploads)
- Downloading movies & music
- Watching YouTube videos
- Streaming Videos and Music
- Using Skype and in particular Video Skyping.
- Facebook: Facebook in itself doesn't use a lot of data. What does, is if you watch a lot of photos and view videos.
- Viewing Graphic Intensive Websites
- Playing online games
- Listening to Radio online
- Virus updates
- Windows updates
- Downloading programs
- Unsecured internal wireless router or weak password (the TrueWAN router uses strong encryption and linked to a Mac address so it is extremely secure)
Please note that each megabyte you use has a cost to True Technologies and therefore we need to charge you for everything you use. The responsibility is on you to keep within your cap or pay the excess bandwidth.
